About GLAWS
“Writers Mentoring Writers of All Disciplines”
GLAWS was created in 2007 by Co-founders Tony Todaro and Neil Citrin.
At the time of it’s inception, the Greater Los Angeles Writers Society had twenty charter members.
At it’s heyday shortly before COVID, we had over 600 paying members. Today we have roughly 80 members, including Lifetime and Honorary members.
The GLAWS Mission
Our current mission:
“to promote, protect, and improve the business conditions, economic opportunities, and professional standing of writers; through activities including, but not limited to: teaching the craft and business of writing, facilitating professional networking, and disseminating essential market information”
Our original Mission, as used to establish our IRS approved 501c(7) status in 2007/2008
Shortly after or while GLAWS was getting official IRS non-tax status, the mission expanded to:
The Greater Los Angeles Writers Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to mentoring writers of all levels in the craft and business of writing, and to providing continuing education with forums for the marketing of their work.
To fulfill its vision of “writers mentoring writers of all disciplines,” GLAWS holds informative monthly meetings, often with nationally-known speakers, offers critique groups, advice in the craft and business of writing, conducts special events, writers seminars, and further promotes its vision through business and social opportunities.
GLAWS welcomes writers from all over California and the country, from aspiring students to best-selling authors, from industry professionals to simply anyone interested in learning more about the craft.

“Can I deduct GLAWS dues?” That is a complicated question. We are not lawyers or tax accountants (although some of our members may be). After having said that, generally purchasing dues or donating money with a 501c7 (or 501c6, like the Writers Guild of America) you can list these under your Schedule “C” (business deductions), like any valid business expense. That gives you a tax deduction/offset. However, we cannot provide legal or tax advice; contact your attorney and your tax accountant. If you do not have one, there are various pro-bono groups out there.
Once GLAWS obtains the services of a lawyer and/or tax accountant, we will update this paragraph.
Note that the Mission of GLAWS is being discussed and may change soon. When it does (the mission will have to change slightly when we are a corporation), we will update this page.
