Special Speaker Events

GLAWS Special Speaker Events are typically held the third Saturday of the month ten times a year. If there are five Saturdays in the month, the date move back one. Sometimes, the SSE is combined with various conferences, to accommodate larger audiences. GLAWS presents educators and industry professionals who speak on the craft and business of writing. They are open to the public and free to attend.

Critique Group Meetings

GLAWS supports critique groups in many categories of writing. Each group is run by a Critique Group Leader and follows the society’s approved Critique Group Guidelines. Groups meet whenever and wherever they so decide. Some members work by “snail-mail” and E-mail between physical meetings.

Many of our critique groups are virtual, to save time and money, but some are in person. Members of each group decide how they best work.

Non-members may attend and critique at groups, but may not be critiqued or present prose or screenplays to be critiqued. We like it if you come and read!

Executive & Advisory Board Meetings

The business of the society is conducted under the guidance of the Advisory Board with the approval of the Executive Board. There are an average of fifteen members on the Advisory Board, which meets typically 3-4 times a year. Parts of the Board meet separately by committee, whenever and wherever the business of the society requires. Members include: two attorneys and a CPA, plus Committee Chairs and Critique Group Leaders.

One may join and participate only by a nomination by an existing member and approval of a majority of the Board. GLAWS members in good standing only. After having said that, if you’d like to volunteer to help writers via GLAWS, please contact us!

Holiday Parties

Holiday parties are held twice a year, once during the summer (typically August) and the first Saturday of December.(In 2026, this will be in January). These take place during the normal time for the Special Speaker Event.

Our Member parties usually consist of a Pot Luck Lunch, Wrapped book exchange, and Open Mic reading by active member/authors. Members only.

Conferences

GLAWS works with West Coast Writer’s Conferences by getting GLAWS members exclusive discounts on conferences! Additionally, GLAWS members in good standing can also volunteer at the WC2 events for even steeper discounts!

We are also conferencingly promiscous, so we also include links to other conferences. Given enough interest, GLAWS may have a booth at these conferences; check the next section!

Bookselling Events

GLAWS secures booth space at various book shows and outreach opportunities for member authors. These are great opportunities for GLAWS authors to increase their platform, make new fans, and of course, sell books.

Note that while anyone may attend a Special Speaker Event at a public library (this is how we keep costs low, compared to other writer groups), other events may not be attended unless you are a paid up member.
